Hands - and minds - across the sea

Harpenden Trust's Care Fund learned just how far its support can stretch when Harpenden Guide Abi Roy gave a fascinating presentation on a trip she undertook to India on behalf of Girl-guiding Hertfordshire with financial support from the Trust.

Abi was one of an international group of Guides to visit India under the project title of "discovering your potential," was a mixture of volunteering in a local school and touring to learn more about Indian culture and the cultures of other volunteers from around the world.

She explained that as a volunteer she and two others were teaching a class of 60 children aged 10-12, when they worked on improving their students' English and on other community projects like anti-bullying.

There was some welcome downtime, too, when they did Bollywood dancing, visted temples in Delhi and the Taj Maha in Agra as well as the ancient city of Jaipur.

Abi said she was most grateful for the financial help she received: it had given her an amazing time - and she learned to be independent, to make decisions, to be a calm leader - and to get on with everyone.
