Gloves on at the Community Fund to Help With a Prickly Opportunity

The Hornbeam Wood Hedgehog Sanctuary in Harpenden, run by Martin Maylin, rescue and rehabilitate wild hedgehogs that have been injured or have health issues, so that they can be released back into the wild or into enclosed gardens if they are blind. The team also educate and raise awareness of wild hedgehogs and their needs.

The Sanctuary successfully applied for a grant from the Trust’s Community Fund for a covered Education and Awareness Shelter to be built on their site, so that they can give interactive talks to groups of children from schools, Scouts and Girl Guides, encouraging the next generation to help and learn about hedgehogs. They also applied for money for live streaming equipment so they can stream their education and awareness talks, the progress of rehabilitated hedgehogs and live feeds of the hedgehogs to a much wider audience.

Steve Pryor, Chairman of the Harpenden Trust Community Fund, said, “A prickly challenge for the Trust’s Community Fund. We were pleased to support the important environmental work undertaken by the Sanctuary, for the valuable insight it provides to the Harpenden community and of the protection it provides for this well-known but sadly vulnerable creature that helps in our gardens and woodlands.”
