Harpenden Mencap is an independent charity caring for adults with learning disabilities in Harpenden and the local area. Founded in 1959, the charity provides accommodation-based support to a thriving community of 33 adults and offers wellbeing-focused activities through its Britannia and Allotment Clubs, benefiting over 50 people in total. The 24 hour support Harpenden Mencap provides is enhanced by the recent provision of a new Support Pod.
The Support Pod in Batford is now complete - this new building provides a multi-purpose space to enhance the care provided to adults with learning disabilities. The meeting room space enables review meetings for the people in our community and their families to get together with senior support workers and review their support package. Support workers have space for training, meetings and administrative tasks. Having a space separate from people’s homes enables greater privacy for the people supported and greater flexibility in the care provided. Staff value the quality space which enables good communication and team culture.
“We’re very grateful to The Harpenden Trust for helping us to complete the build and furnish our Support Pod. This new building will enable us to offer responsive, person-centred support for people with learning disabilities, living in this new community.” Angela Duce, CEO
The charity’s vision is for Harpenden to be the best place in the world for people with learning disabilities to live happy, healthy lives. To find out more, visit - www.harpendenmencap.org.uk
