Harpenden Trust

About the Trust

The Trust’s objective - to help Harpenden people in need, individually and collectively – remains the same as when it was founded in 1948, with Dr Charles Hill (later Lord Hill) as its first President. Dr Hill will be remembered by some as the gravel-voiced Radio Doctor during WW2.

In 1950 the Trust’s role was described by the Daily Sketch as “a social experiment without parallel in this country.”

More than 60 years on there are still Harpenden people suffering hardship, financial or otherwise; people in need of the help of a good neighbour. The Harpenden Trust is here to be that good neighbour, with the active support of the town’s residents.

Recently the Trust has been able to extend its help to community organisations and groups whose aims are to enhance the lives of Harpenden people, especially the young and the elderly.

How WE Help

We help individuals and families living in the AL5 postal district in the following ways:

GRANTS Help with household bills. Vouchers for food and clothing. Recycled furniture and electrical goods.

PUPILS Families helped, confidentially, to meet the cost of essential school trips and uniforms.

UTILITY BILLS Help for pensioners having difficulty paying their winter electricity, gas, water and telephone bills.

OUTINGS Day and half-day coach trips to the seaside or countryside for pensioners, and outings for children – free of charge.

COFFEE MORNINGS Free coffee and biscuits provided for pensioners between 10 and 11am on Tuesdays at the Trust Centre and on Thursdays at High Street Methodist Church Hall.

CHRISTMAS PARCELS delivered to pensioners who might be housebound over the Christmas period.

VISITING Periodic visits to elderly people living on their own.

LOCAL ORGANISATIONS
We help community organisations and charities located in the AL5 postal district, or with particular links to Harpenden, with one-off cash grants linked to specific needs of the organisation. Modest annual help to smaller groups.

How YOU Can Help

  ... by becoming a helper

The Trust is run entirely by volunteers, regular and seasonal. We are always ready to welcome new helpers, especially for our Christmas collection.

If you are able to help on a more regular basis you could make home visits, help at coffee mornings and on coach outings, liaise with local schools, help with furniture collection and delivery or staff the Trust office.

For more information, go to How to Contact Us. For information on jobs we currently need to fill, go to News.

  ... with a donation

It costs the Trust £70,000 a year to support our work helping families and individuals. Some of that money comes from investment income. For the rest we are dependent on the generosity of Harpenden residents. To find out how you can make a donation, or leave money to the Trust in your will, go to Donations

Halls For Hire

The Trust is keen to offer these halls to Harpenden clubs and individuals, either on a one-off or a recurring basis. There is even locked storage available for those who book the halls for regular meetings. The venue is ideal for club meetings, for educational purposes, dance and exercise sessions, tea parties, quiz evenings, one-off charity evenings or childrens’ parties.

There are 2 rooms available for hire

The Renwick Hall is the larger Hall and is a bright, high-ceilinged room with both natural and artificial lighting, and can accommodate 80 people seated or 120 standing.

The Randall Room is the smaller and can seat 40 people, or accommodate 50 standing.

Contact Us at the Trust Centre for more details about hiring the Halls.
